Corruption and Money Laundering Charges Filed in Connection with FAM Scandal
The Prosecutor General has filed charges against multiple individuals and a private company involved in corruption and money laundering within the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).
Charges Filed:
1. Mohamed Ageel (GA. Gemanafushi, Fehikuri)
Charge: Aiding in Money Laundering (Under Section 53 of the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act)
Details: Mohamed Ageel, the former head of FAM’s accounts division, is charged with assisting FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel in misappropriating USD 1 million of FAM funds. These funds were used by Mr. Jaleel to purchase an apartment at Amin Avenue.
2. Hassan Waheed (H. Hirinaidhoo)
Charge: Aiding in Money Laundering (Under Section 53 of the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act)
Details: Hassan Waheed, a former FAM employee, is charged with assisting FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel in misappropriating USD 200,000 of FAM funds. These funds were also used by Mr. Jaleel to purchase an apartment at Amin Avenue.
3. Amin Construction Private Limited
Charge: Aiding in Money Laundering (Under Section 53 of the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act)
Details: Amin Construction Private Limited, the developer of Amin Avenue, is charged with accepting laundered money from FAM and falsifying documents to legitimize the transactions.
Asset Recovery Efforts
The Prosecutor General’s Office has requested the following:
1. Confiscation of the laundered funds.
2. Seizure of the penthouse apartment at Amin Avenue purchased with misappropriated FAM funds.
The filing of these charges is part of an ongoing investigation aimed at uncovering the full extent of corruption and financial misconduct within FAM. Further charges may be filed as evidence emerges.
